Changes to your coursework extension adjustment for the academic year 2024/25

Updated guidance on how to request a coursework extension from your Department

How do I request an extension?

You can request an extension of up to seven days, by contacting your Departmental Disability Contact (DDC) or through the process outlined in your Student Support Information Sheet (SSIS). Make sure to submit your request in advance of your coursework deadline.

What if I need more than seven days for my coursework extension?

The seven-day extension is the maximum allowed under the policy. If you believe you need more time, you should discuss your situation with your Departmental Disability Contact (DDC) and explore other options, such as applying for an Exemption from Late Penalties (ELP).

Can I still apply for an Exemption from Late Penalty (ELP) if I use the extension?

Yes, you can apply for an ELP if you are unable to meet the new deadline due to reasons unrelated to your anticipated disability adjustment

Why has the extension time been changed to up to seven days?

We have introduced this new guidance to reduce confusion and ensure the policy is consistently applied across the University. The maximum seven-day extension will also help to ensure staff can provide timely feedback.

This clarification does not affect the use of other support systems such as Extenuating Circumstances (ECs) and Exemption from Late Penalties (ELPs).

What does 'on a case-by-case basis' mean in this context?

This means that your department will review each request individually to ensure what length of extension is appropriate based on your specific circumstances and the nature of the coursework. The maximum extension period allowed up to seven days.

Will a full policy update be done in the future?

Yes. As part of the Transforming Student Support Project, we are undertaking a full review of the policy regarding reasonable adjustments and support for disabled students.

There will be opportunities for students to contribute to this review and we encourage you to do so.

The current change is a step towards ensuring transparency and consistency; further improvements may be made as a result of the wider policy review.

I don’t have a Student Support Information Sheet (SSIS). Can I still get an extension?

The extension is specifically for students with a disclosed disability listed in their SSIS and recommended this adjustment. If you think you should have an SSIS or need support, contact your Student Experience Office or your Departmental Disability Contact to discuss your situation.

Can I request an extension after my coursework submission deadline has passed?

Extensions should be requested in advance of any coursework deadline. If you miss the deadline, you may need to apply for an Exemption from Late Penalty (ELP) or discuss your situation with your department to explore other options.

Will using the extension affect my grades?

No, using the extension will not negatively affect your grades. The extension is designed to give you the necessary time to complete your coursework without penalty.

Who should I contact if I have more questions about this policy?

For more information, you can contact your Departmental Disability Contact, your Student Experience Office, or visit the support pages.
