Securing a placement

Placement applications do not open until the start of your second year, preparation for the application process begins as soon as you arrive in year one.

Year one, semester one, focuses on the development of fundamental employability related skills including communication, teamwork, commercial, cultural and global awareness. Students are encouraged to get work experience, join clubs and societies and participate in extra- curricular sessions, such as ULMS Extra, to further develop these skills.

Students working together around a table

All students on the Year in Industry programme undertake an employability module in semester two of year one that introduces the recruitment process. The module is run alongside Career Consultants from Careers and Employability, focusing on:

  • Career planning and company research
  • CVs, cover letters and application forms
  • Online testing
  • Assessment centres
  • Interviews

This module gives practical experience of how to research companies and how to compete online applications, alongside giving invaluable experiences of attending a mock assessment centre, prior to making the placement applications in year two.

Many of the larger placement providers open applications in late summer/early autumn. Students who are successful in securing a placement will start in the summer, after year two, with start dates ranging from early July to early September.

I really enjoyed the mock assessment centre process, it was a nice experience and something new. I do feel a lot more prepared for assessment centres now. Certainly nothing to stress over!
