BA Business Economics student gains valuable experience during summer internship in Tanzania

Published on

University of Liverpool BA Business Economics student Sara Akhtar recently returned from a one-month summer internship in Tanzania, accessing this opportunity through Handshake, the University’s dedicated careers website.

Skills gained during a first-year module themed around employability, and lots of tailored support, advice and guidance from the Careers Studio (part of the University Careers and Employability service), enabled Sara to successfully secure this exciting opportunity.

Throughout the internship, Sara contributed towards several projects, including supporting female entrepreneurs with their business practices, such as managing finances and reinvesting. She delivered managing savings training for teachers and volunteers in a local orphanage, as well as educational sessions for students in local schools themed around the economy, climate and mathematics.

In addition to this, she was involved in support work for victims of domestic abuse, attending networking events to try to increase sponsorship and funding for the charity. Sara noted that seeing the tangible impact of these projects firsthand was one of the most rewarding aspects of the experience.

Internships provide students with valuable networking opportunities. During her time away, Sara met students from universities across the world, including France, Germany, and Canada. She also had the opportunity to go on a safari.

Reflecting on her journey, Sara has acknowledged the significant personal and professional growth she has gained. Meeting new people, presenting to large groups and participating in project management were just some of the experiences that has improved her confidence and enhanced her employability skills.

Sara notes: "Before my internship, I was unsure of what I wanted to do after graduation. I am now certain that I want to pursue a career in operations management, international development, environmental economics, or advisory roles when I start applying for graduate schemes”.

Director of Studies for our BA Business Economics programme, Dr Yontem Sonmez noted; “In the contemporary competitive job market, placements offer a unique opportunity to apply theoretical knowledge to real-world scenarios, broaden perspectives, and gain a competitive advantage.

I am very pleased with Sara's internship in Tanzania, which has not only elucidated her career aspirations but also provided a platform to apply her academic learning. Such experiences are instrumental in shaping our students' professional trajectories and preparing them for future success”.
