This language module is designed for students with an A2+ standard of the language in the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR). It is for students who have completed Level 902/002 Beginners 2 or who have some knowledge of the language, such as a rusty GCSE. Through a variety of methods students will develop an elementary competence in reading, writing, listening and speaking and an understanding of elementary grammar. At the end of this 12 weeks module students will be half-ways towards an A2.2 proficiency level in the CEFR and will be able to carry out everyday tasks in the language and to attempt unfamiliar ones. Students will be able to follow and hold a simple conversation and function in daily life using the language. They will be able to talk about shopping preferences, describe character and physical appearance, tell what happens in a precise moment in the past and inquire about shopping costs. They will be able to interact in a simple way provided the other person talks slowly and clearly and is prepared to help. They will have a good understanding of life and culture of some of the countries where the language is spoken and the intercultural skills necessary for their language proficiency level.
Syllabus
1. Apply basic reading, writing, listening and speaking skills in line with the A2 level in Russian in the CEFR.
2. Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of some structures of Russian.
3. Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the cultures of Russian-speaking countries.
Content:
- · Food and drink – restaurants and shopping.
- · Family history.
- · Description of people: What do we look like?
- · Personality traits: What kind of people do you like?
- · The work and study: Everyday occupations and activities.
- · Towns and areas in the Russian speaking countries.
- · Recreation, entertainment, and public services.
- · Popular Russian proverbs and expressions.
Grammatical structures:
- · Verb tenses – present, past, future.
- · Introduction to verbal aspect.
- · Introduction to cases in singular Nouns: Instrumental and Dative.
- · Expressing age.
- · Adjective endings and agreements.
- · Word order in more complex sentences.
- · Expressing preferences – comparisons and superlatives.
- · Expressing possibility and necessity.
Week 12: Written and speaking tests will take place this week. Completing the assessment is required for students taking the course as part of their degree. For all other students, taking the tests is also strongly recommended, as a measure of your progress and learning.

Students need to acquire a copy of the textbook Beginner's Russian with Interactive Online Workbook by Anna S. Kudyma , Frank J. Miller, Olga E. Kagan, Publisher: Hippocrene Books Inc., US. 2010/2018. Approx. £30.
Study Hours
The total number of study hours for this module is 150 hours, in line with undergraduate university modules. This includes class meetings, assessment preparation and self-directed study in line with guidance from the course lecturer.
If you are studying on the extracurricular option, we recognise that the total number of hours that you may be able to study every week may depend on your availability and previous experience studying languages, however, expected contribution to classes, homework completion, and learning outcomes will not vary

I am a passionate language teacher and learner. I was born and educated in Ukraine in the times when Russian language and literature formed a significant part of the National Curriculum in most of the educational establishments. I have a Master’s degree in Linguistics and Oriental Studies from the Shevchenko National University of Kyiv. Over the past 15 years, I have been teaching Russian at different levels and in different institutions in the UK.
