Welcome from the Head of the Department

Welcome to the Department of Languages, Cultures and Film (LCF), and to the start of your exciting journey. In LCF we all share a passion for languages and cultures, the study of which enables us to communicate across boundaries, understand different histories and cultures, and engage actively in a world that is both transcultural and transnational.

Throughout your time with us, those of you studying languages will become bilingual, trilingual or more, and those of you studying film will develop expertise in a range of film cultures from across the globe. Intercultural communication is at the heart of what we do, and equips us all to be responsible global citizens. You will be taught by experts in translation, interpreting, film, literature, history, media and more; languages, cultures and film open doors to different ways of thinking, and we very much look forward to accompanying you on this journey.

This year we have a wide range of events and activities planned for Welcome Week in LCF, tailored both to new students joining us for the first time at undergraduate or postgraduate level, and to returning students. These are designed to familiarise you with your programme and with Liverpool, and importantly to enable you to meet fellow students and staff, including your academic advisor. We look forward to seeing you there!

Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any queries. Our School Student Support Centre is based at 11 Abercromby Square and is open Monday – Friday, 9am–5pm, or you can email us at hlcenq@liverpool.ac.uk.

Good luck with your studies – we look forward to working with you!
