Welcome from Professor Mark Towsey, Head of the Department

I’m very pleased to welcome you to the Department of History.

History at Liverpool is staffed by internationally recognised researchers who are also strongly committed to teaching. We work to ensure our students receive a challenging, wide-ranging education and the skills they need to enter the workplace successfully. As one of our History students, you will have the opportunity to gain both broad comprehensive historical knowledge and develop your own expertise by following your passions. We offer a wide range of modules: from late antiquity through to the present, from the local through to the global, and across the latest developments in social, political & cultural histories.

We believe that studying History at University level involves students and staff working and learning together. It is a process where the end goal goes far beyond remembering dates and places; our aim is to see our students leave Liverpool as broadly educated, historically grounded, global citizens. With this in mind, we will work with you throughout your degree to develop and hone your skills in historical research, deep reading, critical thinking, strong analysis and effective communication (both orally and on paper).

We are pleased to invite all our new undergraduate students and new or returning students at postgraduate level to the sessions scheduled during Welcome Week. We look forward to seeing you there!

Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any queries. Our School Student Support Centre is based at 11 Abercromby Square and is open Monday – Friday, 9am – 5pm, or you can email us at hlcenq@liverpool.ac.uk.

Good luck with your studies!
