English language support for refugees and asylum seekers

The English Language Centre offers free language support to refugees and asylum seekers in the local area.

Who can attend?

You can attend our free language support if you:

  • Are over the age of 18 and you are a refugee or an asylum seeker
  • Can travel to the English Language Centre to attend classes
  • Have an intermediate English skills (approximately a CEFR level B1).

If your English level is lower than intermediate (B1), find out what other support is available to you.

When are the classes?

Monday: 2.20pm – 3.50pm

Wednesday: 2.20pm – 3.50pm

What are the class aims?

The classes aim to build confidence when communicating in English. The focus is on improving knowledge of grammar and vocabulary and practising speaking, listening, reading and writing skills.

Please note this class is not suitable for beginners. You'll need intermediate English skills to be able to join (approximately a CEFR level B1).

How many people are in the class?

There is a maximum of 14 people in the class.

Is there a formal qualification at the end of the course?

No. However, participants will receive a certificate of attendance when they finish studying with us, if attendance meets our requirements.

Note: Some participants progress to join other courses at the University of Liverpool (and other UK universities). In this situation, candidates who join a university course at level 3 or above cannot continue to attend our English classes.

How to join

Successful applicants can join each week depending on space. All applicants must take a language test to check their level is suitable for the class. The test takes about one hour. Grammar, speaking and writing are tested.
