I Got Hired: Evie

Posted on: 21 September 2024 by Kalbir Cross in Class of 2023

Evie King is a Class of 2023 Human Geography graduate who now works as a Senior Analyst on the TJX Buying and Merchandising Development Programme.

How did you hear about your role and decide to apply for it?

I came across the job listing on Indeed. Despite always having a passion for trends and fashion, I never realised it was something I could pursue. I decided to apply, went through the next 4 stages, and eventually got offered the job!

How did you get to where you are now?

I have gained a lot of work experience, including office work and teamwork, which was very beneficial. These experiences helped me realise what I didn't want to do and what was important to me. The recruitment process is lengthy and takes a few months in total, but my biggest piece of advice is to always conduct thorough research on the company you are applying to, to ensure that their culture aligns with your values and that it is a place where you want to work. This will also help you use their key words and context during the interview process.

Your favourite experience as part of your role?

I have been able to travel round Europe looking at different products and stores, I have held focus group mornings talking about gen z fashion and I went to look at a supplier of luxury preloved handbags!

The most challenging part of your graduate journey?

Staying resilient around the screening applications, especially whilst juggling final exams and dissertations.

Top 3 Tips for current students and graduates:

  1. Research the company thoroughly so that you can speak their language, understand their culture, and be prepared to answer questions about them.
  2. Be resilient during the screening processes, as they are meant to be long and challenging.
  3. Remember that all work experience is valuable. It's just as important to learn what you don't want to do as it is to figure out what you do want to do.

Graduate Outcomes Survey

The Graduate Outcomes survey exists to improve the experience of future students. All graduates are asked to share their perspectives 15 months after they finish their course, to build a national picture that UK universities and colleges use to innovate their services. League tables, Prospects and The Complete University Guide use our Graduate Outcomes data to help students make decisions about their future.
