About

David is a Senior Lecturer (Associate Professor) at the School of Architecture at the University of Liverpool, having previously conducted teaching and research at the University of Manchester, Sheffield Hallam University and the University of Nottingham Ningbo China.

Whilst at the University of Nottingham Ningbo China, he was a key member of the Centre of Sustainable Energy Technologies (CSET), contributing to the Key Lab of integrated thermal energy storage technologies for buildings as well as supervising a number of PhD students on a vast range of research areas, including the study of Urban Heat Islands in Zhejiang Province and the performance of Double-Skin Facades. He also worked very closely with the Ningbo Construction Committee and have an expert understanding on energy consumption issues in buildings in China and the UK, with the impact of future climate change. He has won and managed research grants equating to 300,000 RMB as Principal Investigator, and a further 1,100,000 RMB as Co-Investigator. Most of the funding were acquired whilst working for the University of Nottingham’s China campus in Ningbo, where it was difficult to acquire grant from national and provincial funding bodies as a foreign university. He was one of a handful of academics there successful in securing substantial funding and also collaborated with the municipal construction committee on the standard of their buildings and building services plants, together with some of the top local universities in China.

He is a reviewer for 4 scientific journals as well as for funding bodies in the UK and China and has so far examined 11 PhD theses in the UK, China and Australia. He has been invited to give keynote speeches at 5 international conferences, and chaired sessions at several other international conferences.

He is a registered chartered engineer through the Engineering Council UK and Fellow of the Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers (CIBSE), as well as a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (HEA) and member of the American Society of Heating and Refrigeration and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE).

His main research interests are in the field of how energy consumption in different types of buildings will be affected by future climate change, as a result of excessive greenhouse gas emissions, as well as further urbanisation resulting in increasing urban heat island effects (including in rapidly developing economies such as China and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia). He is also interested in how energy consumption in buildings can be minimised, by means of passive design strategies and improvements / incorporation of renewable technology systems.
