Welcome from Professor Bruce Gibson, Head of the Department

We are thrilled to welcome all our students joining the Department. My colleagues and I are all committed to doing everything to enhance your experience as a student in the Department of Archaeology, Classics and Egyptology.

The Department is an exceptional grouping of scholars and students whose interests in the past range across millennia from the earliest human origins to the end of classical antiquity and the receptions of the ancient world in later societies down to the present.

As an undergraduate student, you are beginning an exciting period of three years where you will explore the past in new and novel ways. As you explore the human experience through all kinds of diverse evidence and material, you’ll learn that the defining issues facing humankind today (e.g. disease, climate change, diet, conflict and warfare, colonisation and migration, belief systems, imperialism, the power of the written and spoken word and its capacity for good or ill) are not new, but have a legacy stretching back over millennia.

For our new postgraduate students, whether joining us for Masters programmes or for PhDs, you will be able to build on your existing knowledge and skills and focus on more specialist areas of your chosen subject.

Make sure that you take advantage of the programme of events organised for you in Welcome Week, including your introductory meeting with your individual academic advisor.
