Degree Apprenticeship Programmes

Degree apprenticeships are a collaboration between training providers such as universities and employers. They offer an alternative to University level study to individuals who are in employment or seeking employment alongside study.

Degree apprenticeships are an alternative to traditional Degree and Masters Degree level programmes, combining both academic and vocational training as well as gaining work experience in a specific job role.

Apprenticeships are designed by employers, for employers, and test both academic and occupational competencies.

Degree apprenticeships were launched in September 2015. We have seen an increase in the number of degree apprenticeships available, the number of employers offering degree apprenticeships to both existing staff and as a way to recruit new talent and the number of universities including degree apprenticeships in their offer.

Degree apprenticeships are a great way for employers to meet skills needs within their organisations and increase social mobility.

Degree apprenticeship programmes are very different in design and delivery to other degree programmes. In addition to meeting the academic frameworks set out in the Code of Practice on Assessment, the apprenticeship programmes must accord with the requirements of the Institute for Apprenticeships & Technical Education - meeting the Knowledge, Skills and Behaviours within the apprenticeship standard, the QAA, the Education and Skills Funding Agency funding rules and, if relevant, the PSRB.
