A term to remember: student innovations, awards and a Royal visit
As the spring-summer term comes to a close at the School of Medicine, we reflect on the variety of achievements, opportunities and events that our current students have participated in. They have certainly been busy!
The Artefacts society worked non-stop to deliver not one but two showstopping events. They took to the dancefloor and dazzled audiences with their Strictly Come Dancing fundraiser, raising over £2000 for KIND Liverpool and Claire House Children’s Hospice. This year’s Glitter Ball went to Oscar Atkinson and Lucy Secker for their fast-paced jive, earning top marks from the judges and a standing ovation.
We had the most amazing night in St George’s Hall, raising money for two incredible causes. We’ve always loved Strictly Come Dancing and this was certainly a night to remember.

Student Doctor Flynn Walsh spent an unforgettable birthday whilst on placement, being able to assist in the delivery of a baby by caesarean section. Flynn supported the medical team, drew up injectable medications, and performed his first catheterisation on a real patient. It was a proud moment and valuable opportunity as a third-year medical student to practise clinical skills in a real-life scenario.
It was a pleasure to have the opportunity to practise both my procedural skills of catheterisation and drawing up medications and to have the chance to scrub in and assist in my first caesarean section. Speaking to the patient before, during and after the operation, it was a privilege to be a part of and share in that moment with the family.

During an oncology placement, recent graduate Emily Kelly was inspired to create a lasting and soothing treatment for cancer patients suffering from peripheral neuropathy. Inspired by her own mother’s chemotherapy journey, Emily’s innovative cooling boots and gloves have helped lessen the side effect of chemotherapy, with positive outcomes reported in trials.
Prior to this journey I didn’t think my career path would involve much research. However, having now seen how one of my ideas has snowballed into a potentially very impactful project, I can definitely see myself getting involved in research and plenty of quality improvement projects in the future.

What a year it’s been for student Maria Hanif, completing her intercalated year studying the Clinical Sciences MRes and receiving the European League Against Rheumatism (EULAR) 2024 Abstract Award. Maria was awarded the Undergraduate Abstract Award and was invited to Vienna to present her findings relating to Childhood-onset Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (cSLE).
I really enjoyed attending EULAR. It was my first time going to an international congress, this year hosted in Vienna which is an amazing city. I had the opportunity to present my work and discuss current on-going research with both adult and paediatric Rheumatologists from across the globe.
Sporting successes dominated the term with the LMSS clinching multiple titles within football and rugby. Liverpool Medics RFC made club history by winning the North West Leagues Division 4 title. For LMS FC, they brought home four impressive titles, including NAMS champions, the Campus Cup and Campus League.
Achievements like this will bond us for life and is more important than the titles we have won. We’re already talking about our 50-year walking football reunion match!

A royal visit was the highlight of the term for student Erin Powell. Following her impressive completion of the Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award, Erin was invited to Buckingham Palace to receive her award.
It pushed me out of my comfort zone and gave me a lot of experiences I would otherwise have not had. So much of the programme is directly transferrable into real life and will help me as I go through university and into my career.
