University of Liverpool graduate Dr Jack Symes has been named in the BBC’s 2024 New Generation Thinkers, a prestigious award, which recognises promising early career researchers in the UK.

Jack’s research focuses on the philosophy of religion and he cites his time at Liverpool as helping him on his way to success.

He said: "I’m delighted to have been named one of BBC’s New Generation Thinkers, which wouldn’t have been possible without the support of the University of Liverpool’s Department of Philosophy. I had the privilege of completing my undergraduate, master’s, and PhD at the University of Liverpool.

“One of the great things about Liverpool is how active the Philosophy Department is with public outreach. It was only three years ago when Liverpool’s Vid Simoniti was also named as a BBC New Generation Thinker. This continued recognition shows the Department’s commitment and success in delivering research that’s of value to the public. That’s something I’m proud to have been a part of."

Jack has previously hosted his podcast, The Pansycast Philosophy Podcast live at The Tung Auditorium. This live event, which took place in 2022, focused on the mystery of consciousness, and Jack was joined by co-host Olly Marley in conversation with Archbishop of Wales, Rowan Williams, scientist Anil Seth, University of Liverpool lecture in philosophy, Laura Gow and philosopher Philip Goff.
