Beyond academic interest, Steven shares a lasting connection with James Ellroy that has developed over the years. Reflecting on this, he said, “I’ve known him for about 15 years personally, and I’ve known his work since I was a teenager because that’s where it all started with my passion for his work, especially as quite a lonely teenager finding his books, and finding them so powerful.” Through extensive interviews and research, Steven gained deep insights into James Ellroy’s life and work, crafting a biography that is both compelling and authentic.

Steven’s academic journey began at the University of Liverpool, where he earned his BA in English Language & Literature in 2005, followed by an MA in Victorian Literature in 2006, and a PhD in English in 2014. His time at the University laid the groundwork for his career, driven by his passion for literature and commitment to academic excellence.

Reflecting on his time at the University, Steven said, “The University has played a huge part in my life […] it’s given me the sense that I can go out and do big projects, in some ways with the University’s blessing, and I’m an Honorary Fellow in the English Department and the books I’ve written have gone into the REF.”

In addition to his literary achievements, Steven is also a staff member at the Sydney Jones Library. From undergraduate student to award-winning writer, Steven continues contributing to academia while pursuing his passion for writing.
